Nino Caruso

A master of the postwar renewal of Italian ceramics, Nino Caruso took his first steps in the workshop of Salvatore Meli, a formative relationship that durably shaped his conception of ceramics as a sculptural and architectural medium. He distinguished himself by liberating ceramics from the utilitarian object and inscribing it within modular, monumental, and site-specific forms. Through the combination of technical experimentation and an ongoing dialogue with the ancient forms of the Mediterranean, he redefined the expressive and spatial potential of contemporary ceramics.
